Various Approaches to Youth Engagement

 Promoting Youth and Adult Partnerships

Youth Interns

Youth interns are young people who work within an organization to gain practical experience and contribute to projects. Internships offer hands-on learning opportunities and help youth develop professional skills while providing fresh perspectives to the organization.

One-Time Consultations from Youth

These are single-session engagements where youth provide their insights and feedback on specific issues, projects, or proposals. This method is efficient for gathering diverse opinions without requiring a long-term commitment from the youth.

Focus Groups

Focus groups involve small groups of youth discussing specific topics or issues in a structured setting. This format allows for in-depth discussion and the collection of qualitative data on youth opinions and experiences.

Surveys

Surveys are tools for collecting quantitative data from a larger group of youth. They are useful for gathering broad insights and statistical information on youth attitudes, preferences, and behaviors.

Listening Sessions

Listening sessions are meetings where youth share their experiences and feedback directly with program designers and decision-makers. These sessions help ensure that programs are responsive to the actual needs and interests of young people.

Government Youth Liaisons, Youth Councils, and Youth Commissioners

These roles involve youth in formal advisory positions within governmental or organizational structures. Youth liaisons, councils, and commissioners help bridge the gap between young people and policymakers, ensuring that youth perspectives are included in decision-making processes.

Steering Committees & Leadership Roles

Youth serve on committees that guide the direction of programs or initiatives. Leadership roles empower youth to take active responsibility in shaping organizational strategies and outcomes.

Youth Participating in Hiring Process

Youth involvement in hiring allows them to participate in interviewing and selecting candidates for positions that impact youth services. This ensures that staff members are chosen based on their ability to connect with and serve young people effectively.

Youth Participating in RFP & Grant Allocations

Youth are involved in reviewing and deciding on proposals for funding. This inclusion helps ensure that funded projects align with youth needs and priorities, and teaches young people about the funding process.

Peer Mentorship Programs

Youth mentor their peers, providing guidance and support in various areas such as academics, career planning, and personal development. This fosters a supportive community and enhances the skills of both mentors and mentees.

Youth-Led Workshops and Trainings

Youth design and conduct workshops for their peers on topics of interest, such as digital literacy, mental health, or leadership. These activities build confidence and expertise while ensuring content relevance.

Youth Advisory Boards

Advisory boards consist of youth members who provide ongoing input and advice to organizations. This continuous engagement ensures that youth perspectives are regularly integrated into organizational planning and decision-making.

Youth in Research and Evaluation

Engaging youth in research activities, including data collection, analysis, and reporting, empowers them to contribute to evidence-based practices and understand the importance of research in program development.

Youth-Led Social Media Campaigns

Youth manage and create content for social media to promote initiatives and engage their peers. This approach leverages the digital fluency of young people to reach and influence a wider youth audience.

Youth Representation on Boards of Directors

Including youth as full members on boards of directors ensures that their viewpoints are considered in high-level organizational decisions, promoting policies that are more youth-centric.

Skill-Building Workshops

Workshops focused on developing specific skills such as public speaking, project management, or coding. These programs help youth build competencies that are valuable for their future careers.

Art and Cultural Projects

Projects that allow youth to express their creativity through various art forms such as painting, music, theater, and dance. These activities promote cultural awareness and personal expression.

Community Service Projects

Youth design and participate in service projects that address community needs. This involvement fosters a sense of responsibility and civic engagement.

Youth Forums and Conferences

Events specifically for youth to discuss important issues, share ideas, and network with peers and professionals. These gatherings provide a platform for youth voice and leadership development.

Youth Co-Design Programs

Collaborative design processes where youth work alongside adults to develop programs that directly affect them. This ensures that the programs are relevant and effective.

Youth Feedback Mechanisms

Formal channels for youth to provide regular feedback on programs and services. This continuous loop of feedback helps organizations stay responsive to youth needs.

Intergenerational Programs

Programs that bring together youth and older generations to share experiences and knowledge. These initiatives foster mutual understanding and respect across age groups.

Youth Participation in Budgeting

Involving youth in the budgeting process to allocate resources to projects and initiatives that benefit them. This participation ensures that financial decisions reflect youth priorities.

Youth Storytelling Initiatives

Platforms and programs that encourage youth to share their personal stories and experiences. Storytelling fosters empathy, understanding, and a sense of community.

Youth organizing

Youth organizing involves empowering young people to take collective action on issues that matter to them. Through training and mentorship, youth learn how to build and lead campaigns, mobilize their peers, and engage with decision-makers. These initiatives foster leadership, teamwork, and a deep sense of civic responsibility.

Youth Advocacy

Youth identify issues they want to address in their communities and are supported to speak out and to collectively advocate for themselves and their needs.
